A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term finished the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its role in civilian projects. They were executed at an rapid rate, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked persistent apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party urged an prompt pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
