Just as Storm Claudia swept through the north-west the previous evening, Manchester City blew Manchester United aside at the their home ground. It was a statement 3-0 win for Andrée Jeglertz’s side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a performance that truly announced their title credentials as they reinforced their standing at the top of the table.

Consecutive Setbacks for United

This scoreline signalled successive Women's Super League defeats for the United manager's side for the initial occasion since spring 2024, leaving them seven points off the table toppers with their trophy ambitions severely dented.

The Red Devils' ability to manage league and European soccer with a small squad has been a hotly discussed topic since they earned a place in the UCL. Considering the calendar, it always felt like this was the matchday that would seriously challenge this capability. Unfortunately for the visitors, they appeared fatigued throughout, the historic win against the French side clearly having left its mark.

Team Changes

Marc Skinner had sought to rotate the squad with a handful of changes. Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all provided energy, although the dropping of the in-form Melvine Malard to the substitutes raised a few eyebrows.

City, in comparison, have fewer loading issues. Jeglertz made a single alteration from their most recent win over Everton with Hemp making her first start since returning from injury.

Overpowering Start

The pressure started to build for the United boss and his team from the first whistle. This was a show of the quality from City whose potent forward line played with and dismantled the opposition with a superb initial 45 minutes showing that saw them score three goals in just over twenty minutes.

This left the home team firmly in control and saw the visitors struggling. In advance of this encounter, the away side had allowed just a handful in this WSL season but they disintegrated in the face of City’s attacking flair.

Early Chances

The warning signs came quickly when Miedema used her physicality to bundle Zigiotti off the ball, only to pull her shot off target. Lauren Hemp was at the core of everything from the start, exploiting the gap left by Jayde Riviere down United’s right side. Her passes were posing a threat and led to an attempt for Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg kicked off the line.

United had a number of sorties ahead, their direct style giving them choices in the flanks but they could not test the City goalkeeper. Manchester City, in the meantime, commanded the ball, probing their opponents and trying to pull them out of their organization.

Triple Strike

They made their pressure count with almost the first period played when Fujino won the home team a corner. A ball to the back post was headed across goal by Bunny Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to head in. It was City’s seventh header of the season.

They added to their cushion with another pair of goals just before the half-time. When Jade Rose was allowed to drive through the center from defense, the field widened for City. The influential Kerstin Casparij received possession on the wing before providing a pinpoint ground pass for Shaw to force home. Shortly later, they had a additional score after a quick shift in possession saw Hemp afforded the space to strike a shot home from range.

After the Break

The most obvious change came from Skinner at the half-time as Melvine Malard was introduced for Terland but by this time it was too late to change the course of the match. Former City player Park came most likely to score, hitting the woodwork, but the away team were offensively poor and did not manage to register a one shot on goal.

The hosts, on the other hand, could have increased their cushion when a superb Vivianne Miedema through ball sent Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it mattered little to the hosts. Having failed to defeat any team who placed above them last season, the manager's side now have successes against the Gunners and Manchester United to position them in a commanding situation after nine games.
