Nearly twenty-five thousand residences in south-east Queensland woke up without power on the start of the week after severe thunderstorms impacted the region, generating wind gusts hitting over 100 km/h.

Massive Hailstones and Widespread Destruction

Residents witnessed substantial frozen pellets measuring up to 7cm in particular locations. Weather authorities confirmed that different parts across Queensland had been affected by large hailstones.

Response teams were working to restore electricity service throughout the impacted areas, with dozens of response units working to address the extensive power failures.

Southern State's Climate Difficulties

At the same time, around 1,000 energy customers in the southern state also encountered power outages after the capital city recorded its wettest day in 18 months.

Rescue organizations responded to nearly 600 calls for help across the area, mostly for building damage but also for collapsed vegetation and water accumulation.

• Hoppers Crossing area - multiple rescue reports
• Wyndham region - 179 help reports

At one point on yesterday, more than 28,000 power users in Victoria were lacking electricity.

Climate Outlook

Damp conditions were expected to linger along large portions of the state's eastern regions this next several days as a atmospheric system continued to draw in moisture against the coast.

Tomorrow was expected to become the wettest day, with continued thunderstorm potential expected across various areas of both regions.

Health Warning

Public health experts warned that there was an increased chance of epidemic thunderstorm asthma across the countryside regions, especially given the existing atmospheric conditions.

This caution comes after historical occurrences where similar conditions led to major medical consequences in the state.
