The Kindness of Strangers: The Way a Person I Only Just Encountered Assisted Me Land the Role That Transformed My Existence

During the late 1980s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a travel partner. Because my friend was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in the Big Apple, we had planned a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We got to the student accommodation, a big ten-floor structure on the Manhattan's Upper West Side called International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we got some food, sat down, and began chatting with other diners.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at a prestigious New York university. He asked me what I did for a living, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He noted that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – right next door to the engineering department, which was how he knew about it. He suggested that I should apply for a position with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was about to fly to Europe and, more critically, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, returning to the canteen that evening. The engineering student walked over to me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately told my host that I was without a work permit, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

In typical New York fashion – a city where opportunities abound – she responded: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for a trio of years. A perk of the job was that I got free tuition at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a postgrad program in international relations.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his name, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in numerous aspects. I would never have had the bravery or self-belief to approach someone at an elite institution and seek a position. Moreover, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that job in New York paved the way for a role in Europe where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
